Department Overview

In this historical moment, when the definition of "culture" is being rewritten, and the borders between national, ethnic, racial, religious, and class based "cultures" are being redrawn, this faculty's research publications play an essential role, not only within the university but in the community at large. Whatever the subject matter addressed, this department is profoundly engaged with the history of ideas, culture, society, and artifacts. The Department of Art History at the University of Minnesota takes seriously its role in preparing students to face the contradictory demands of an ever more visual culture and its contribution to art history, theory, and criticism.
